EU Commissioner: opening of more crossing points to bring people closer
Brussels, Jan 27 (CNA) -- EU Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn during a meeting with Turkish Cypriot politician Mehmet Ali Talat, leader of the Republican Turkish Party (RTP), has said the opening of more crossing points on the dividing line in Cyprus, would contribute to bringing closer Cypriots of both sides of the island.
Rehn and the T/C politician discussed the latest developments in the Cyprus issue and the prospects for the solution of the political problem.
According to EU sources, Rehn has indicated to Talat that the EU Summit's decision on 17 December 2004 for Turkey's accession talks with the EU is an opportunity for the promotion of new initiatives under the auspices of the UN towards a Cyprus settlement.
He reiterated the Commission's readiness to offer its good services in the process to reach a comprehensive, viable solution if, of course, this help is asked.
The Finnish Commissioner expressed hope that a solution will be soon found as regards the EU regulations for financial aid to Turkish Cypriots and the direct trade between the EU and Cyprus' Turkish- occupied areas.
During his visit in Brussels, Talat had the opportunity to express his views in several meetings with EU officials. He asked for their support to open the occupied ports of the Republic and start direct trade with the EU.
