Defence Minister says no Turkish response on de-mining
Nicosia, Jan 27 (CNA) - Cypriot Defence Minister Kyriakos Mavronicolas said today that there was still no response from the Turkish occupation army in relation with ''unilateral efforts on our side for the de-mining of the ceasefire line.''
In statements to the press, Mavronicolas said ''we have no problems'' regarding the lifting of the minefields and ''we are in full cooperation with the companies that have undertaken'' this project.
Asked if the National Guard has requested that residents of the Kaimakli area in Nicosia abandoned their homes temporarily due to de-mining works, Mavronicolas said ''there was no possible danger for the population'' of the area and that what has been done is ''an effort on behalf of the National Guard to inform the population regarding the de-mining and possible explosions in the area.''
He noted that the lifting of minefields in the Kaimakli area would begin shortly.
