Cyprus FM participates in EU General Affairs meeting
Nicosia, Jan 31 (CNA) -- Cyprus Foreign Minister George Iacovou is in Brussels to participate in the General Affairs and External Relations Council of the European Union, under the chairmanship of Luxembourg Foreign Affairs Minister Jean Asselborn, whose country holds the six-monthly rotating EU presidency.
The Council will hold a public debate on the operational programme of the Council for 2005, which was prepared jointly by the Luxembourg and the UK presidencies (in the second half of 2005) and on the annual working programme of the Commission.
The Council will discuss the cohesion component of the financial perspectives of the EU for the period 2007-2013, on the basis of a questionnaire from the Luxembourg presidency.
At a working lunch today, the 25 ministers of foreign affairs will have an exchange of views on the current political situation in the Middle East and Iraq.
Iacovou went to Brussels from Georgia where on Saturday, last day of his official visit, he met with Patriarch of Georgia Elias II, who expressed sadness over the continuing Turkish occupation and division of Cyprus.
The Patriarch, who thanked Iacovou for the support and assistance Cyprus has given to Georgia, expressed his solidarity with Cyprus, saying that his own country is also facing secessionist problems.
Iacovou and the Patriarch exchanged views about the political situation in Cyprus and Georgia.
