Cypriot government says new crossing point ready to open
Nicosia, Feb 4 (CNA) - Cypriot Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides said today that the Astromeritis crossing point between the two sides on the island was ready to open and that the existing road would be used for commuting purposes, adding that the Greek Cypriot side would proceed with the de-mining of the area.
Chrysostomides expressed hope that the opening of this new crossing point would lead to the opening of yet another one, in Ledra Street, in addition to the expansion of the EU Green Line Regulation, aimed at facilitating trade between the two sides.
''It is expected that the occupation forces will also agree and proceed with the de-mining of the area under occupation, near Astromeritis,'' he added.
Replying to questions, Chrysostomides said it was ''absolutely confirmed'' that the existing road would be used, noting that ''this has been our side's position from the beginning, despite moves by the occupation force to make a diversion through minefields and avoid the old Astromeritis-Zodia road.''
Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third.
