EU positions on Cyprus' accession have not changed
Nicosia, Apr 23 (CNA) - EU's official position regarding Cyprus' candidacy for
accession to the Union has not changed, Jean Filori, spokesman for
European Commissioner on enlargement Gunter Verheugen, has assured
Referring to an interview European Union High Representative for foreign and security policy Javier Solana gave on Sunday to the Greek newspaper "Vima", in which he is reported to have said that if a solution to the Cyprus problem is not found, then only the "greek Cypriot part" of Cyprus will join the EU and the northern part (occupied by Turkey) will have to wait, Filori said the EU would prefer a political settlement before accession but this is not a precondition.|
Filori said if a solution is not found, then legally the whole of the island will accede but it will be complicated to implement the acquis communautaire in the areas of the Republic, which are not under the control of the legitimate and only recognised government of the Republic of Cyprus.
Cyprus, which opened accession negotiations with the EU in 1998, has been divided since 1974 when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third.
