Washington, Feb 25 (CNA) - As a matter of policy, the US has long opposed the militarisation of Cyprus, US State Department Spokesman Richard Boucher has said, noting that a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus problem, based on the plan proposed by UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, would provide for a resolution of the Cyprus issue, including its security aspects.
Replying to a question about the recent transfer of arms from Turkey to the Turkish occupied areas Cyprus, Boucher said ''we have no independent confirmation of these media reports,'' adding that ''as a matter of policy, the US has long opposed the militarisation of the island.''
''A comprehensive settlement based on the Annan plan would provide for a resolution of the Cyprus issue, including its security aspects,'' he said.
