Nicosia, Mar 2 (CNA) -- Greek Cypriot Conservative Councillor of Barnet in London Andreas Tambourides has been unanimously elected as new Mayor of Barnet.

He is the first ever Greek Cypriot Mayor of the Borough of Barnet in its 41-year history. He will take office as the 42nd Mayor of Barnet for the year 2005/2006 at the Mayor Making Ceremony on 17th May at Hendon Town Hall.

Tambourides has been a Barnet Conservative Councillor since 1998, and a Deputy Mayor in 2002/2003.

After the election last night, which was not contested by other political groups, Tambourides was congratulated by a crowd of Greek Cypriots residing in London who had watched his election from the Public Gallery in the Council Chamber.

Tambourides was born in Nicosia in 1946. He worked as a newsreader at the Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation on radio and TV and participated in children's programmes.

He went to London in 1964. He has been active in promoting the goal for a just and permanent settlement of the Cyprus problem.
