Nicosia, Mar 2 (CNA) -- Greece had pledged to continue participating actively in security issues concerning Cyprus and offer its unwavering support until the normalization of the situation on the island.

Greek Deputy Government Spokesman Evagelos Antonaros said yesterday after a meeting of the Foreign and Defence Governmental Council, which met under Premier Costas Karamanlis, that ''Greece, as any other country, must take effective measures to protect itself and has the obligation to build up its defence capabilities.''

Antonaros noted that the Greek national defence policy acts on three pilars, to cope with threats, secure an efficient, preventive and reliable force due to the fact that there is not any change in he Turkish policy questioning Greece's sovereign rights and offer Greece's full support to efforts made by the Republic of Cyprus to reach a firm and viable solution for the island's reunification within the UN framework.

Antonaros noted Greco-Turkish relations have been improved, stressing that Greece fully backs Turkey's European aspirations.

He said ''Cyprus' accession to the EU creates new circumstances as regards the Cyprus problem and efforts to reach a firm and viable solution for the island's reunification within the UN framework.''

''Until this situation is normalised the Cyprus Republic will enjoy the complete and multilevel support of Greece, that will actively participate in the security issues of Cyprus,'' he added.

Turkish troops have been occupying 37 per cent of Cyprus territory since 1974, in violation of repeated UN resolutions calling for their withdrawal.
