Cyprus football team leave for Switzerland
Nicosia, Mar 28 (CNA) -- Cyprus' National Football Team left today for Switzerland, where they will face on Wednsday, 30 March, the Swiss team for the preliminary round of the 2006 World Cup, the final stage of which will take place in Germany.
Wednesday's match in Zurich against the Swiss sqaud will be the first official game of Cyprus' team under new coach Angelos Anastasiades from Greece.
''We expect a good performance,'' Andreas Akkelides, Cyprus Football Association's Deputy President, told CNA, although he acknowledged that the Swiss team are a very tough opponent as they managed to secure a draw against the French national team and 2000 World Champions in Paris, last Saturday.
The Cypriot team, who defeated 2-1 Jordan in a friendly match on Saturday, in Larnaca, seek a positive result in Zurich to shake off the bad results in the 4th qualifying group. The Cypriot team defeated twice from Israel, and once from France and Ireland and drew with the Faroe Islands.
''There is optimism and confidence among the football players, which derives from the good training and the positive results in the latest friendly matches,'' Akkelides added.
Cyprus ranks fifth in Group 4, comprising six teams.
