Nicosia, Apr 4 (CNA) – A preparatory meeting of the International Donors’ Conference entitled “Municipalities Alliance for Peace in the Middle East” took place in Limassol last week, bringing together the Association of Palestinian Local Authorities and the Israeli Local Authorities Union.

The meeting, which was coordinated by the Union of Cyprus Municipalities and The Hague Municipality, was attended by the leaderships of the Palestinian, Israeli and Dutch municipality unions while the Union of Cyprus Municipalities was represented by its Secretary Athos Germanos, a statement by the union said.

The mayor of The Hague and chairman of the Dutch Union of Municipalities Wim Deetman pointed out the need for more active involvement on the part of the local authorities in the region to contribute together with European local authorities for peace and stability in the region.

The Union of Cyprus Municipalities had undertaken the initiative to carry out the preparatory meeting, bringing to practice the decisive role which Cyprus can play as a bridge between the EU and the Middle East, something that was appreciated by the Palestinian, Israeli and Dutch delegations, the statement said.

The two sides held a productive discussion on issues that will concern the International Donors’ Conference which will take place in The Hague in June. The parties determined the conference’s agenda and made a list of the municipalities and international organizations that will be invited and agreed on the priorities which demand international financing. They also set out the framework of the projects that will be proposed for co-sponsoring.

The Association of Palestinian Local Authorities and the Israeli United local authorities, together with the support of the international community, decided to undertake action that will promote self-understanding and cooperation improving the daily lives of their citizens.

The Cyprus Union of Municipalities will be represented at the Donors’ Conference in June and will continue to support the procedure and participate in cooperation networks that will be appointed based on this initiative, the statement concluded.
