Cyprus to participate in Mediterranean Games
Nicosia, Apr 6 (CNA) -- Cyprus will participate in the 15th Mediterranean Games with 45 athletes, who will compete in 11 out of 24 events, Kikis Lazarides, President of the Cyprus Olympic Committee, expressing hope that some of them could very well bring back home some medals.
Speaking at a press conference, Lazarides, who is also member of the International Olympic Committee, said Cyprus will aim to be among the eight top countries in the final ranking of the Games, to take place in Spain in late June beginning of July.
''This time we are competing to achieve results. I believe that four or five of our athletes can win medals,'' he said, adding that already the Committee and the Cyprus Sports Organisation are in the process of selecting the athletes who will represent the country at the Games.
President of the Spanish Olympic Committee Jose Maria Echevarria said his tour to the 21 countries that will participate in the Games is to promote this competition and seek the contribution of participants.
''We would like Cyprus to participate with its top athletes to raise the level of the Games. We can assure you that you will feel at home in Spain,'' he said.
The advisor to the organising committee of the Games Seven Florensa said the competition aims at improving relations among participating countries.
