Flags at half-mast in Cyprus on Pope's funeral
Nicosia, Apr 7 (CNA) -- Flags at government buildings will fly at half-mast on Friday, the day of the funeral of Pope John Paul II, it was officially announced here today.
President Tassos Papadopoulos will represent Cyprus at the funeral. He leaves tonight for Athens from where tomorrow morning he will travel to Rome together with Hellenic Republic President Karolos Papoulia.
The Orthodox Church of Cyprus will be represented to the funeral by the acting primate of the Holy Synod, Paphos Bishop Chrysostomos, and Bishops Triminthountos Vasilios and Kykkou Nikiforos.
President Papadopoulos has expressed deep sorrow at the death of the Pontiff, pointing out that he had displayed courage, tenacity and worked very hard for world peace.
Papadopoulos had an audience with the Pope last October during a visit to the Vatican.
