Cyprus EU Commissioner to meet 25 health ministers
Nicosia, Apr 13 (CNA) -- European Commissioner for Health and Consumer Protection Marcos Kyprianou will meet Thursday health ministers of the 25 EU member-states at an informal ministerial meeting in Paris to discuss influenza pandemic preparedness.
According to European Commission press release, Kyprianou said that the EU was making ''steady progress'' in improving its defences against a possible influenza pandemic.
However, he cautioned that making further progress will require sustained political support from the European Parliament and Member States.
Meanwhile, Kyprianou met Monday with Turkish Agriculture Minister Sami Guclu.
This was the first meeting between the Cyprus Commissioner and a Turkish Minister, after the decision of the European Council in December for the beginning of accession negotiations with Turkey in October 2005.
Kyprianou and Guclu exchanged views on the compatibility of the Turkish laws with the acquis communautaire.
The Commissioner underlined the need for a greater effort on the part of Turkey so that the Turkish laws are aligned with the European laws on issues regarding food safety, veterinary control and animal passports and pledged technical and financial aid to this end.
Yesterday technical meetings took place to examine in greater detail what measures are required to ensure Turkish compliance with the acquis.
