Britain continues to encourage Cypriot sides for solution
London, Apr 18 (CNA) – Britain continues to encourage both sides in Cyprus to seek a comprehensive solution to the Cyprus problem, a Foreign Office spokesman has said, commenting on the result of Sunday's polling in Turkish-occupied Cyprus.
Republican Turkish Party leader Mehmet Ali Talat was declared the winner, replacing Rauf Denktash as leader of the Turkish Cypriot community.
“We are aware of the result and we continue to encourage both sides to seek a comprehensive solution,” the spokesman said.
Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkish troops invaded and occupied the island’s northern third.
