Kennedy’s visit continuation of US efforts on Cyprus
Washington, Apr 27 (CNA) -- US State Department deputy spokesman Adam Ereli has said the purpose of Deputy Assistant Secretary for European and Eurasian Affairs Laura Kennedy’s visit to the region next week is a continuation of existing efforts on Cyprus.
Asked about the purpose of Kennedy’s visit to the region, Ereli said Kennedy will depart May 1st to visit Ankara, Athens, Nicosia, Brussels and London.
“The purpose of her trip is to consult with parties on the way forward regarding a Cyprus settlement as well as on bilateral issues”, Ereli said, adding that “our position is that the Annan plan offers the best way forward for a resolution of the Cyprus issue”.
Ereli said the US is “working to encourage movement by both parties in support of that plan”.
To a question if this was a new initiative, Ereli said “it is a continuation of existing efforts”.
Turkish troops have been occupying 37 per cent of Cyprus territory since 1974, in violation of repeated UN resolutions calling for their withdrawal.
