Mine clearance in a buffer zone area completed
Nicosia, Apr 27 (CNA) -- The EU-funded (2.5 millions Euro) UNDP Partnership for the Future (PFF) De-mining Project has announced the completion of the mine clearance in Zodia, which is located in the buffer zone.
A press release issued in Nicosia said ''mine clearance in Zodia is a first step for the opening of the crossing point. It contributes to free movement of persons and goods across the island in support of the EU Green Line policy.''
Furthermore it said ''EU involvement in the mine clearance contributes to the process of reconciliation on the island.''
The press release noted that since the launch in November the programme has cleared over 100,000 square metres and disposed of more than 1,300 mines found in Zodia, Kaimakli and Nicosia areas.
It added that in the coming months the de-mining programme intends to begin mine clearance operations in the areas of Ledra Street, Dherinia, Kaimakli, Kato Pyrgos, Kokkinokremmos and Lefka.
''The necessary EC legislation to open both Zodia and Ledra Street is already in place,'' the press release concluded.
