Cyprus Defence Minister: Turkish occupation forces show no good will for demining
Nicosia, Apr 28 (CNA) -- Cyprus Defence Minister Kyriakos Mavronikolas said that there is no good will on behalf of the Turkish occupation forces for the demining of the cease-fire line dividing Cyprus since 1974.
Mavronikolas stated that the demining process in Zodia - Astromeritis area in Nicosia district has been completed, adding that the process will proceed in the remaining areas as scheduled by the Cypriot government's programme.
''Our aim is not solely to make our own demining, but our aim was and remains to contribute so that and the occupation army launch its demining campaign. Unfortunately, until now there is no good will on behalf of the occupation troops for the completion of the demining of the cease-fire line,'' Mavronikolas noted.
According to Mavronikolas, the next phase in the demining process is the area around Ledras street in the old Nicosia sector.
He added that the next demining steps would be made in Dherynia area, in the eastern part, and in Pyrgos, in the western part. ''We will at the same time request the opening of crossing points in these areas,'' Mavronikolas added.
Turkish troops have been occupying 37 per cent of Cyprus territory since 1974 in violation of repeated UN resolutions calling for their withdrawal.
