US: Congratulations is no recognition of illegal regime
Washington, May 4 (CNA) – US State Department Spokesman Richard Boucher has said that Washington had congratulated Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat because he won "an election".
Replying to a question during the daily briefing, he added ''we congratulate the ones we think deserve it'', noting that this is not a form of recognition of the self-styled regime in Turkish occupied Cyprus.
Asked why the US government had congratulated Talat on his election, Boucher said: ''We congratulated him because he won an election as leader of the Turkish Cypriot community''.
Responding to questions about the transfer of US weapons from Turkey to the occupied areas of Cyprus, he referred to earlier statements by the State Department that there has been no transfer of US weapons to Cyprus' Turkish-occupied areas that will cause concern and violation of statutes.
''We've had our best legal experts look at it. We've given you their best answer. That's the authoritative legal answer'', he added.
