Cypriot President praises Moscow for impressive celebrations
Nicosia, May 10 (CNA)--Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos has praised Russia for the ''impressive'' celebrations it hosted on Monday to mark the 60th anniversary of VE day (Victory in Europe), that signalled the end of the Second World War in Europe in 1945.
Speaking on his return from Moscow, Papadopoulos thanked the Russian government for its decision to decorate former Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides, who fought in the war, and Michalis Poumpouris, as a representative of the Cypriot volunteer force that joined the war on the side of the Allies.
''It was an impressive ceremony. Special honours went to the War veterans and many heads of states expressed gratitude to the Russian people for their sacrifices during the war,'' Papadopoulos said, noting that Russian victims during WW II were more than the victims of all belligerent sides combined.
''Once again I express my thanks for the warm hospitality and the honour Russia has given to us,'' the President added.
