Cyprus to host CISM 60th General Assembly
Nicosia, May 10 (CNA) -- Cyprus will host on May 11-15 the 60th General Assembly of the Conseil International du Sport Militaire (CISM), with the participation of 300 delegates from 90 member-states.
Speaking after a meeting here today with CISM's President Italian Brigadier Gianni Gola, who is visiting Cyprus, House President Demetris Christohias said that he explained to his interlocutor that the Cypriot National Guard cannot engage in peaceful activities, such as sport, as long as Turkish troops continue to occupy the island's northern third.
Christofias pointed out that the Greek Cypriot side is trying to promote joint sports activities between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots, adding that recently a Greek Cypriot refugee football club from the Turkish occupied town of Famagusta, Nea Salamina, played against Turkish Cypriot club Yeni Cami.
''I hope and wish that we will have more good news towards this direction,'' he added.
In statements, Gola said that CISM had accepted Cyprus' invitation to host the 60th Annual General Assembly ''to express our appreciation and to underline the vital importance, from a political and military point of view, of the efforts by your country for peace and friendly relations on the island,'' adding that CISM supports this effort.
Gola met with Cypriot Defence Minister Kyriakos Mavronicolas who said that hosting the CISM General Assembly will justify efforts by the National Guard to promote sport within the military.
The Assembly will take place at Strovolos Municipal Theatre in Nicosia and Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos will address the opening ceremony on May 12.
Cypriot National Guard joint CISM in 1991, and Cypriot athletes participate in every CISM activity ever since.
