Cyprus condemns US Congressmens' illegal visit to occupied area
Nicosia, May 12 -- Cyprus Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides said that a planned visit by a US Congress delegation to the Turkish-occupied northern part of Cyprus through the ''Ercan'' illegal airport in occupied Tymbou would constitute an illegal action and a violation of the United Nations Security Council resolutions on Cyprus and particularly resolution 550 of 1984.
Democrat Congressman from Florida, Robert Wexler, announced yesterday that a Congress delegation headed by him and by Kentucky Democrat, Congressman Wayne Edward Whitefield, will be visiting Turkey on June 1 and will afterwards travel to the occupied part of Cyprus through ''Ercan''.
''If the delegation travels to the occupied areas (through Ercan) that would be nothing but a further illegal action, which is contrary to the UN Security Council resolutions and particularly resolution 550 (1984),'' Chrysostomides said.
This will be the first US Congressmen delegation visiting Cyprus through the occupied areas. The delegation members are members of the ''Friends of Turkey Group'' in the US Congress.
Soon after the Turkish invasion and occupation of Cyprus' northern third in the summer of 1974, the internationally recognised government of the Cyprus Republic declared all airports and ports in those areas illegal ports of entry.
