Demining process continues in Cyprus
Nicosia, May 12 (CNA)-- Cyprus' Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced that the demining of Astromeriti-Zodhia area with a view to prepare the opening of a new cross point in the Astromeriti-Zodhia road, has been completed, recalling also that the mine clearance in the area of Lefka was completed at the end of April, 2005.
''With the completion of the above work the demining teams have started clearing the National Guard minefield in the area of Kaimakli,'' the press release said.
It also said that on 9 May, 2005 the removal of mines began in the areas of the villages of Kato Pyrgos Tillirias and Denia.
The Foreign Ministry said clearance of the National Guard minefields situated in the buffer zone is a unilateral gesture on the part of the Cyprus Government and it is expected that the occupation forces will respond accordingly.
The press release said the coordinating agency of the demining program in Cyprus is the Mine Action Cell. The demining program is carried out with the assistance of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and of the EU program “Partnership for the Future” (PFF).
The funding of the whole program is made through the “Partnership for the Future” program of the EU.
The press release said the Government of the Republic of Cyprus expresses its thanks to the EU for funding the project as well as to the United Nations and to the UN Peace Keeping Force in Cyprus for the assistance and contribution in carrying out the demining process.
