MFA makes representations concerning the intention of Congress members to visit the occupied areas via the illegal Tympou airport
Nicosia, May 16 -- The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Ambassador Sotos Zackheos, at the instructions of Mr Iacovou, called on the Acting US Ambassador to Cyprus, Charge d'Affaires of the US Embassy Mr Ed Nolan, and made a strong representation in relation to the intention of US Congress members to visit the occupied areas of the Republic of Cyprus via the illegal airport of Tympou.
Mr Zackheos pointed out this kind of visit violates the resolutions of the UN Security Council, of which the US is a member, provokes the public sentiment of the people of Cyprus and follows a series of other unacceptable moves by the US that aim at upgrading the status of the illegal occupation regime.
Mr Zackheos called on the members of the US Congress to review their position and visit Cyprus through its legal airports so that apart from safeguarding law and order, they will also be given the opportunity to be briefed by Cyprus Government officials. No government or state official of the Republic will accept the US Congress delegation if it arrives through the occupied areas, in violation of UN Security Council resolutions and the territorial integrity of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr Zackheos added.
