UN meetings concentrate on substance of Cyprus problem

United Nations, May 18 (CNA) – Discussions here Tuesday between a Cypriot delegation, under Presidential envoy Ambassador Tasos Tzionis, and UN Under Secretary General for political affairs Sir Kieran Prendergast concentrated on the substance of the Cyprus problem.
A UN Spokesman said after the meeting “there was a preliminary exchange of (views on the) substance today (Tuesday), which will be continued” Wednesday.
The members of the Cypriot delegation included Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador Andreas Mavroyiannis, deputy Representative Andreas Hadzichrysanthou and the President’s advisor Claire Palley.
No statements were made because of a news blackout.
A new meeting will take place today at 1545 local time (2245 Cyprus time). A diplomatic source has said the aim of today’s discussions will be to investigate the ground for the resumption of negotiations on Cyprus.
