US support UN in efforts to solve Cyprus problem
By Demetris Apokis- Washington, May 15 (CNA) - The United States have expressed their support
to UN efforts to solve the Cyprus problem.
State Department spokeswoman Lynn Cassell told her regular briefing that "we actively support the UN in its efforts to reach a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus issue".
She added that "our Special Coordinator for Cyprus, Tom Weston, provides ongoing diplomatic support for the direct talks, and we stand ready to continue assisting the UN Secretary General and his Special Adviser in this important endeavour".|
Asked if the US were optimistic about a settlement, Cassell said "we are always optimistic".
Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash launched face-to-face talks to solve the problem, under UN auspices.
