Cyprus President: Up to UN Chief to decide upon new initiative
Nicosia, May 23 (CNA) -- Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos said here today that it is up to the UN Secretary General Kofi Annan to conclude his consultations and meetings and decide if the necessary conditions exist for a new initiative on Cyprus.
Quoting the UN, he said that the Greek Cypriot side, during the discussions in New York between his envoy, Ambassador Tasos Tzionis, and UN officials, elaborated its positions clearly and in detail.
''Our objectives were to persuade the Secretary General that the Greek Cypriots had rejected his plan for good and valid reasons because it did not provide for the actual reunification of the island and to encourage him to start a new process'', Papadopoulos added.
''These are the facts and it is not right to talk about a failure or success of consultations such as the ones that took place in New York. No negotiation has taken place, we did not set any conditions to be accepted, and no conditions were set for us to comply with'', he explained.
