Athens, May 24 (CNA) -- The latest developments in the Cyprus question, in the light of the recent deliberations of the Cyprus President's envoy with the UN Secretariat in New York, and prospects for the resumption of Cyprus talks, were discussed during a meeting here today between the Foreign Ministers of Greece and Cyprus, Petros Molyviatis and George Iacovou.

The close and regular cooperation between the two capitals was reaffirmed during the meeting.

Molyviatis said ''our meeting took place in the framework of the regular and close cooperation between Nicosia and Athens. It is well known how regularly we cooperate and we coordinate our actions towards a common goal'' that is ''the reunification of the island, through negotiations based on the Annan plan, and the UN resolutions and in harmoy with the principles and values of the EU, of which Cyprus is a member.''

The Greek FM said he and Iacovou looked into the latest developments especially under the light of the informal, preliminary deliberations which took place in New York.

He added that ''we looked into the possibility of new prospects so as a new process begins to seek the solution that I have described.''

Iacovou said that meetings between Cyprus and Greece were taking place at three levels: diplomatic, Foreign Ministers and heads of government.

''We meet very regularly within the framework of the EU Ministers' Councils and because he (Molyviatis) was not present in Brussels during the last Council, I considered that we should exchange views,'' he said.

Iacovou added that ''there are many challenges the Cyprus Republic is facing, at the UN Security Council, as regards the renewal of UNFICYP's mandate, the Islamic Conference, in the EU framework as regards the adjustment protocol for the Ankara agreement, and the European Commission regulations.''

Later on Iacovou was received by the President of the Greek Republic Carolos Papoulias.

Sources said Papoulias and Iacovou exchanged views on latest developments in the Cyprus question and prospects for the resumption of talks.
