Irish military ends 41 years association with UNFICYP
Nicosia, May 25 (CNA) -- The Irish Defence Forces have ended 41 years of peacekeeping service in Cyprus at a special ceremony, UNFICYP announced today.
The Irish presence in UNFICYP still continues with 18 members of the Irish Police currently serving as members of the peacekeeping mission's civilian police component.
A total of 9,540 Irish peace-keepers have served with UNFICYP from 1964, when the force arrived on the island, to the present day. Two of UNFICYP's force commanders have been Irish peacekeepers.
At Tuesday's brief ceremony, the last serving member of the Irish contingent presented the flag to Ireland's Ambassador to Cyprus John Swift.
