Entry into Cyprus through occupied ports illegal, says spokesman

Nicosia, May 25 (CNA) -- Entering Cyprus through the Turkish occupied areas of the Republic is illegal, Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides said here today, adding that any such move is contrary to Security Council resolution 550 which calls on all states not to recognize any other state on the island other than the Republic of Cyprus.

His comments come in the wake of reports that US Congressmen intend to arrive in Cyprus through the northern Turkish occupied areas, which the government has declared illegal ports of entry into the country.

''Our position is that any such visit and in particular a visit by officials of a foreign country to the occupied areas is illegal and contrary to resolution 550,'' he said.

Responding to questions, he dismissed suggestions from former US special coordinator for Cyprus Thomas Weston that the proposed visit by the Congressmen is not illegal.

''I cannot follow his reasoning,'' he said, adding that the government has made all the necessary demarches to protest such visits to Washington.
