OPCW workshop in Cyprus on Chemical Weapons Convention
Nicosia, Jun 13 (CNA) -- The Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) organises in Nicosia a three - day workshop (June 13 - 15) on the Chemical Weapons Convention which has already been signed by the Republic of Cyprus.
General Director of the Organisation Rogelio Pfirter, who is currently on the island to address the workshop, met today with Minister of Labour and Social Insurance Christos Taliadoros.
In statements after the meeting, Taliadoros said that part of the responsibilities of the Ministry's Inspection Department is to track Cypriot industries that produce or use chemical products that could be used for the making of chemical weapons.
''The Ministry's Department informs the OPCW about the data it collects, which are then being included in the archive of the Organisation'', he said.
The delegates at the OPCW workshop in Nicosia will discuss among other issues, the steps towards the implementation of the Chemical Weapons Convention in the Mediterranean basin, the Middle East and the neighbouring countries, as well as the promotion of the peaceful use of chemistry.
