Cyprus European Party holds its founding congress
Nicosia, Jul 3 (CNA) -- Cyprus newly founded European Party held here today its founding congress.
MP Demetris Syllouris, Nicos Koutsou and MP Christos Taramountas were declared as President, Deputy President and Vice President of the party. They have all been elected unopposed.
The congress was attended by Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos and other officials and was addressed by political party leaders and representatives.
In his speech Syllouris pledged that the party will work to promote the soonest possible a functional settlement of the Cyprus problem that will respect Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots fundamental rights and freedoms and will be fully compatible with the acquis communautaire and the EU principles and values.
He said the rejection of the UN plan for a Cyprus settlement by Greek Cypriots last year must not interpreted as a refusal for a settlement or as giving up hope and expectation for a safe settlement.
The European Democratic Party, of which Cyprus European Party has become a member, said in a message read out at the congress that the settlement of the Cyprus problem must be compatible with the acquis communautaire, the UN resolutions and human rights in order to be just, democratic, functional and viable, noting that in this framework the results of last year's referendum on the UN plan for a Cyprus settlement and the rejection of the plan by Greek Cypriots must be respected.
