House of Commons welcomes visit of Cyprus President to London
Nicosia, Jul 21 (CNA) -- In an early day motion tabled by six MPs, the House of Commons welcomes the visit of Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos to London on 26 July for a meeting with British Prime Minister Tony Blair.
The House also calls upon the British Government, as a guarantor power, to take the lead in working for a solution based on the reunification of Cyprus as a bizonal, bicommunal federal republic.
It trusts that the discussions between the Cypriot President and the British Premier will focus on the need for a renewed effort together with interested partners and under the auspices of the UN to find a viable and lasting solution to the Cyprus problem which is acceptable to both communities in Cyprus and consistent with the basic principles of international law and the statues of Cyprus as a member of the EU.
It also notes that this is the first official visit of President Papadopoulos to the UK since his election in February 2003 and that is mindful that Cyprus and the UK are bound together by history, many bonds of friendship an a common respect for democracy and human rights.
