Cyprus government satisfied over demining in Nicosia buffer zone
Nicosia, Aug 5 (CNA) --The Cyprus government expressed here today satisfaction over an agreement reached by the Turkish occupation forces and UNFICYP for the destruction of the minefields in the buffer zone in Nicosia, calling on them to proceed with the demining of the entire occupied areas.
''We express our satisfaction over the agreement between the occupation forces and the UN to demine a limited number of minefields around the buffer zone'', Mari?s Karoyian, the Presidentís Press Office Director told CNA.
He added that ''we hope that there will be a demining process to destroy the minefields throughout the whole occupied areas and not only in the buffer zone.''
He recalled the Cypriot government last year began unilaterally clearing National Guard minefields within the UN-controlled buffer zone as well as the destruction of anti-personnel mines, in full support of UN policy and in accordance with the provisions of the Ottawa Convention.
Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkish troops invaded and occupied the islandís northern third.
