ICAO position on illegal flights to occupied areas remains unchanged
Nicosia, Aug 11 – The position of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) as far as Cyprus is concerned has not changed and the organisation continues to follow the UN’s policy on Cyprus, its President, Assad Kotaite, has said, stressing that the illegal airport at Turkish occupied Tympou is not included in the list of international airports.
According to an official statement in a reply letter dated 9th August to Cyprus’ Ambassador to Washington and the island’s representative to ICAO Euripides Evriviades, Mr. Kotaite stressed that all members of ICAO should act according to the existing conditions of safety for international flights as they have been set out by the organisation.
He also said that according to the Regional Air Navigation Plan (European region), the Nicosia Air Traffic Control Centre is responsible for the entire Nicosia FIR.
In his letter, Mr. Evriviades had referred to the illegal flights of Azeri planes to the Turkish occupied north of Cyprus, last month.
Mr. Kotaite’s position has been repeated in an earlier letter to Cyprus Foreign Minister George Iacovou.
