Chinese FM believes Cyprus solution should benefit all Cypriots
Nicosia, Aug 23 - The solution of the Cyprus problem should be based on the relevant UN resolutions and should be to the benefit of all Cypriots, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China Li Zhaoxing has said, reiterating that his country, a permanent member of the Security Council, will continue to support the sovereignty and integrity of Cyprus.
Mr. Li Zhaoxing, who was on an official visit to Cyprus, made the statement after his meeting with House of Representatives President Demetris Christofias who reiterated that the Greek Cypriot side is struggling for a functional settlement of the Cyprus problem which will serve the interests of both Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots.
During his meeting with Mr. Christofias, the Chinese official reiterated that his country supports efforts for a peaceful solution of the Cyprus problem.
Mr. Christofias told Mr. Li Zhaoxing that during the April 24 2004 referendum on the UN Secretary- General's plan for a comprehensive settlement, the Greek Cypriots did not reject the solution of the Cyprus problem, but rejected the particular plan, which was widely regarded as serving the interests of the occupying force.
In earlier statements, after his meetings with President Tassos Papadopoulos and Foreign Minister George Iacovou, the Chinese official had said that China firmly supports the efforts made by the government of Cyprus for the protection of its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkish troops invaded and occupied the islandís northern third.
