House President attends World Conference of Speakers of Parliaments in New York
New York, Sep 7 -- Cyprus House President Demetris Christofias is in New York attending the 2nd World Conference of Speakers of Parliaments, organised between September 7 - 9 by the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) at the UN Headquarters.
The Conference deals with the challenges of the 21st century and the role of the parliaments. It aims at projecting to the UN an overall view, at the highest level, of the contribution of the parliaments globally to the enhancement of the multilateral system and the promotion of peace, security, democracy, human rights and development.
Mr. Christofias attended today's inaugural ceremony and a reception hosted for participants by the President of the IPU Sergio Paez. He also had a meeting with the President of Russian Duma Boris Gryzlof and during his stay in New York he will also meet with the presidents of parliaments of other countries.
Mr. Christofias addresses the Conference today and will participate in discussions on the role of the parliaments as regards UN reinforcement.
Tomorrow, Mr. Christofias will be the main speaker at a gathering of overseas Cypriots in Astoria and on Saturday he will leave for Cyprus.
