Putin reiterates Russia's steadfast stance regarding Cyprus issue

Nicosia, Sep 9 (CNA) ---- Russia maintains a steadfast stance regarding the solution of the Cyprus issue, under the auspices of the United Nations, and will continue to pursue a solution that would be to the benefit of all Cypriots, President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin has stressed, after a meeting in Greece with Greek Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis.

Putin said that Russia and Greece share similar views regarding the Cyprus question and he thanked Greece for its constructive stance regarding the development of the Russia - EU relations.

''Recently I welcomed in Russia Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and we discussed thoroughly the Cyprus issue. Now I would like to touch base with you regarding this issue. Our stance regarding the UN is well known. We will pursue in the future a solution of the Cyprus issue, for the benefit of all Cypriots'', he said.

Greek Premier noted that Greece appreciates the ''steadfast and unreserved support of Russia in the efforts for a comprehensive and just settlement of the Cyprus problem.''

Besides the Cyprus question, Karamanlis and Putin discussed the enhancement of their economic cooperation, recent developments in the West Balkans, energy issues as well as cooperation in the high technology sector, both noting that they share similar views in these sectors.
