Nicosia hosts ''Earth from Above'' photo exhibition
Nicosia, Sep 17 (CNA) ---- Aerial pictures from planet earth, taken by French photographer Yann Arthus - Bertrand decorate the center of Nicosia until mid November, in the framework of the Cyprus International Festival ''Kypria 2005''.
The exhibition, entitled ''The earth from above, An aerial portrait of our planet towards a sustainable development'' presents 120 photographs of the French artist, who visited Cyprus three times in the past, taking photographs of the island's shores, archaeological sites and old mines.
The artist expressed his wish to present his photographs in Nicosia, after seeing from above the demarcation line, dividing the island since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37% of its territory.
In statements during a press conference, Bertrand said that artists are equally responsible for planet earth and its environment, as politicians are.
Nicosia Mayor Michalakis Zampelas expressed conviction that the exhibition will help Cypriots review their environmental behavior.
Apart from the artistic dimension, the artist wished to give his exhibition an educational and humanitarian dimension, aiming to strengthen environmental consciousness and help Cypriot children's associations, ''Cans for Kids'' and ''Make a Wish'' for sick children in need.
The exhibition has been presented in 70 countries around the world and has been visited by more than 60 million people.
