2005-09-30 13:31:24

Nicosia, Sep 30 (CNA) - Norway supports the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of the Republic of Cyprus and hopes for a solution of the Cyprus problem that would end the separation of the communities on the island, new Ambassador of the Kingdom of Norway to Cyprus Finn Fostervoll said today, presenting his credentials to President of the Republic of Cyprus Tassos Papadopoulos.

Receiving the credentials, the President of the Republic expressed his sincere appreciation and gratitude of the people of Cyprus for Norway's continuous support towards the efforts of finding a just and viable solution to the political problem, adding that ''Norway's financial contribution to the United Nations Peace Keeping Force in Cyprus is also greatly appreciated.''

The President noted that Cyprus' accession to the EU and Norway's participation in the European Economic Area provide new paths for further strengthening their bilateral relations.

Referring to the recent signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between Cyprus and Norway for the materialisation of the provisions of the financial mechanism that was created by Norway within the framework of the Treaty for the Enlargement of the European Economic Area, he said that the MOU demonstrates the new opportunities that are now available for the two countries in promoting their cooperation and extending it into new areas.

He also praised Norway's active participation in attempts to solve international disputes such as those of Sri Lanka, Somalia, Sudan and the Middle East Peace Process, saying that this demonstrates Norway's true commitment towards promoting peace and democracy.

''Cyprus also has a special role in the Middle East Peace Process. Thus, cooperation between the two countries on resolving conflicts in the Eastern Mediterranean can be strengthened. Both countries have put effort into as well as hosted meetings and talks over the Israeli-Palestinian conflict,'' the President noted.

The Norwegian Ambassador expressed his compliments to President Papadopoulos ''on the way you have secured and increased the welfare of the citizens of the Republic of Cyprus and promoted the country's economic growth'' and said that environmental technology and the maritime sector are areas of special interest for Norway.

''Let me assure Your Excellency of my government's continuing support for the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of the Republic of Cyprus. Norway sincerely hopes that it will be possible to find a solution that will end the separation of the communities in Cyprus in the not too distant future,'' the new Ambassador concluded.
