Cyprus thanks Mexico for its support in international fora
Nicosia, Oct 7 (CNA) - New Cypriot Ambassador to Mexico, Antonis Grivas, expressed the gratitude of the government and people of Cyprus for Mexico's continuous support in international fora.
Presenting his credentials to Mexican President Vicente Fox Quesada, Grivas expressed his sorrow that 31 years after the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974, nothing has changed and the occupation of the island continues.
The Mexican President referred to Cyprus' accession to the European Union, saying that this opens new horizons for the enlargement and enhancement of the commercial and financial relations between the two countries.
Grivas noted that ''Turkey continues to behave with the attitude of the Ottoman Empire, without having realised that its new European bid demands harmonisation with the European and democratic principles.''
Referring to Turkey's unilateral declaration that it does not recognise the Republic of Cyprus, he said that it showed to Europe that Turkey has to forget about its past and follow the path leading to democracy.
''Your Excellency, you know very well these positions, because you enjoy democratic values in your country and share the same principles. We thank you for the continuous support towards Cyprus in international fora and the cooperation of both our countries in all aspects,'' the Ambassador concluded.
