Agriculture Minister reassures consumers over bird flu
Nicosia, Oct 31 (CNA) – Agriculture, Natural Resources and the Environment Minister Timis Efthimiou reassured consumers on the island that they should not be afraid of the avian influenza (bird flu) virus.
Speaking on the sidelines of a visit to free range egg and poultry farms to evaluate the series of measures which the government announced to handle any bird flu incident, Efthimiou said “poultry producers have fully cooperated and taken all measures required following the recent government order''.
''Poultry producers are strictly taking all measures announced and there is absolutely no danger in consuming poultry meat”, he said.
The Cypriot Agriculture Minister said that with the cooperation that the government has with organized poultry breeding, “there is absolutely no reason for consumers to be afraid of the bird flu”, adding that no panic is justified, nor changing habits as far as consuming poultry is concerned.
Efthimiou said all poultry units do not allow the entrance of any wild birds and the latest technology safeguards conditions of health for all poultry.
Controls will continue to be carried out on a daily basis, since Cyprus is a transit country for migratory birds and will continue until the danger of bird flu is completely wiped out.
