Paris, Nov 4 (CNA)-- Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos, on an official visit to Paris, will announce today the start of a structured dialogue between France and Cyprus aimed at discussing foreign policy and European Union matters on various levels.
Today Papadopoulos will have a working lunch with French President Jacques Chirac at Champs Elysee.
The structured dialogue was on the agenda of yesterday's meeting between Cypriot Foreign Minister George Iacovou and his French counterpart Philip Douste-Blazy.
''We discussed the issue of the structured dialogue between the two countries which will be announced by President Papadopoulos after his meeting with President Chirac,'' Iacovou.
The Cypriot Minister said that relations between France and Cyprus will enter a new phase in that the two countries will be discussing ''foreign policy and EU issues on various levels.''
This, the minister pointed out, is an important development because France regards Cyprus as one of its partners.
Iacovou said that during the meeting Blazy was interested to be informed about the latest developments in the question of Cyprus and a role the EU could possibly play in the effort to bring about a settlement, that would respect the UN role in any such attempt.
''The discussion showed that France was and will be our friend and it will support all efforts for a solution both at the UN and the EU,'' Iacovou added.
