Cyprus solution must be acceptable to majority on both sides, says US
Nicosia, Nov 4 (CNA) - All parties need to engage under the auspices of the UN to find a solution in Cyprus acceptable to a majority on both sides of the island, said a US State Department spokesman.
His comment came in response to a question about US readiness to support substantive changes to a UN-proposed solution plan, the Annan Plan.
The plan was rejected by the overwhelming majority of the Greek Cypriots and approved by the majority of the Turkish Cypriots.
The spokesman was speaking in the wake of statements by Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos that there may be a shift in Washington's position with regard to the changes that need to be made to the Annan plan, in order to render it acceptable to both sides.
