UNMOVIC office to continue operating in Cyprus
Nicosia, Dec 5 (CNA) – The Cyprus Cabinet decided today to extend the operation in Cyprus of the office of the United Nations Monitoring Verification and Inspection Commission (UNMOVIC) for Iraq.
Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides said the government’s approval of the UN request is due to its policy to grant facilities to the UN and strengthen and internationally promote Cyprus’ regional role.
The UNMOVIC office began operating in October 2002 after an agreement between Cyprus, the UN and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
The UNMOVIC office is manned by five persons, in anticipation of a Security Council decision on the issue of inspections of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. The UN and IAEA intention is to maintain the office in Cyprus until the issue is resolved.
