Spokesman lists organisations blocked to Cyprus by Turkey
Nicosia, Dec 7 (CNA) - Cypriot Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides gave to publicity today a list of international organisations and treaties, to which Turkey, and EU candidate, is blocking the membership of the Republic of Cyprus, already a full EU member.
According to Chrysostomides, these organisations and treaties are the Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR), the Wassenaar Arrangement, the Open Skies Treaty, the Organisation of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation, the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), the EU-NATO Cooperation Declaration of the Copenhagen Council, the European Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasts, the European Conference of Ministers of Transport (ECMT), and the Conference on Disarmament.
''Turkey continues and indeed with recent actions to block the participation of the Republic of Cyprus in all these organisations or conferences or international treaties, by veto,'' the Spokesman said.
Asked if these actions were also made after the agreement of the 25 EU member states on Turkey's negotiating framework and their joint statement, Chrysostomides said ''unfortunately it seems that in some cases yes, even after the decision.''
He added that this was a violation of the negotiating framework, noting that ''in 2006 Turkey's whole attitude towards its EU obligations will be examined.''
To a comment that Minister of Foreign Affairs George Iacovou had stated that the Republic of Cyprus would not remain passive on the issue of Turkey's veto and asked what moves the Republic of Cyprus would make, the Spokesman said that ''wherever possible the relative pressure will be exerted by our side.''
