Good management of fisheries in Cyprus, says EU Commissioner
2005-12-12 16:55:08

Limassol, Dec 10 (CNA) - All member states of the European Union must be treated equally and if Turkey wishes to join the Union, then there must be no discrimination, Commissioner for Fisheries and Maritime Affairs Joe Borg said today.

Borg, who is paying a two-day visit to Cyprus, toured the fishing harbour of Limassol and fishing farms in the district.

Concerning Cyprus' fishing industry, Commissioner Borg said that it seems to be under good management under government supervision.

The government, he noted, tries to create the appropriate conditions for the survival of fishermen and at the same time apply measures against over-fishing.

Borg also said there are special EU funds to help modernise the fisheries industry and assist the work of the fishermen.

The European Union, he added, believes it is important to protect the fishing industry because it is part of the coastal communities of member states.
