New UNFICYP Head of Mission in Cyprus assumes office
Nicosia, Jan 4 -- The new UN Secretary-Generalís Special Representative for Cyprus and Head of the United Nations Peacekeeping Mission Operation on the island (UNFICYP), Mr. Michael Moller of Denmark, has assumed office.
Mr. Moller, who succeeds Mr. Zbigniew Wlosowicz, was previously Acting Deputy Chef de Cabinet to the Secretary-General and Director for Political, Peacekeeping and Humanitarian Affairs in the Executive Office of the Secretary-General.
His portfolio also includes preparing the ground for peace talks to resume aiming towards the island's reunification.
On this, President Papadopoulos said on Wednesday: The government is doing its best, away from the public limelight, to ensure that a new initiative for a solution is well prepared in order to have good prospects of success.
But he also warned: ''It is not too difficult to resume negotiations but without good preparation of the agenda and the issues to be discussed, such an initiative could soon collapse and lead to a deadlock."
