Cypriot center breaks world record in kidney transplants
Nicosia, Jan 13 - Kidney transplants carried out in 2005 at the capitals' Paraskevaideio Surgical and Transplant Center reached a world record, considering the population proportion.
The Center, which is a private one, announced that 53 kidney transplants were carried out with over 90% success, which is considered to be one of the highest in the world.
Among those who received transplants are six Turkish Cypriots and one Greek national. Ten transplants were taken from cadaveric and 43 from live donors.
The first transplant of 2006 concerns an 18-year-old Turkish Cypriot student, whose father was the donor. The patient's health is considered to be progressing in a satisfactory manner.
Since its establishment in 1986, the Centre has carried out a total of 667 kidney transplants with the highest success rates in the world.
