Cypriot President meets Partiarch of Moscow

Moscow, Jan 21 (CNA) -- Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Alexiy II expressed the view that no quick steps should be made in solving the Cyprus problem.
Speaking at the meeting he held here with Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos, currently in Moscow for a working visit, the Patriarch said the solution plan for Cyprus, coming from outside forces, must be understood and supported by the Greek Cypriots.
He added that the Cypriot government keeps a peaceful approach towards the solution of the Cyprus problem.
As for the free movement of Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots across the dividing line, the Patriarch noted that these personal and human contacts help towards the peaceful existence of the two communities on the island.
Referring to Cypriot President, he said that he contributed significantly to the unity of the orthodox church of Cyprus.
Cyprus, he said, being a member of the EU can play an important role so that the voice of the Orthodox Church can be heard in the western countries.
President Papadopoulos thanked Patriarch Alexiy II for his kind words and expressed appreciation and admiration for his knowledge in the Cyprus problem.
During the meeting, Papadopoulos analyzed the recent situation in the Church of Cyprus over the archbishop elections.
Later on, President Papadopoulos will visit the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour where he will be awarded during a ceremony with other personalities by Patriarch Alexiy II.
