US Ambassador pays first visit to Interior Minister
Nicosia, Jan 23 (CNA) -- New US Ambassador to Nicosia Ronald Schlicher has paid today his first visit to Minister of Interior Andreas Christou. They exchanged views on issues of common interest such as Cyprus' national plan against the trafficking of persons, property issues as well as the political scene.
Speaking after the meeting, Schlicher said it was a wonderful meeting, during which Christou, ''a very busy man with very much on his plate,'' gave him an excellent account of the work at his Ministry.
''I was very interested to hear the Minister's update on the national action plan that Cyprus has adopted against the trafficking in persons,'' he said, noting that this is an issue of great interest not just to Cyprus and the US but to the world community in general ''and we very strongly support what the government of Cyprus in the national action plan has determined as a matter of policy to do.''
''The Minister also gave me a feeling of what his Ministry does with regard to property issues we also, as two people interested in the political scene, talked about the prospects of this year for the national elections and the municipal elections as well,'' he added.
Welcoming the Ambassador, the Minister wished him success and further progress on the issues of common concern and especially in efforts promoting a Cyprus settlement.
Christou said they exchanged views on a number of issues of common interest, such as the foreign workers in Cyprus, the European Union directive for the foreigners living in a country for many years and the problem of trafficking of persons.
